EN ST. THOMAS
Roca que sobre roca se ha erigido,
un orden arrancado de los suelos.
El eterno mecerse de las hayas;
el sendero ablandado por las hojas
y los murciélagos que piruetean, que sajando el aire se precipitan
del tejo a los recovecos y a los tejados.
La luna es un tocón sobre los campos,
sólo un borrón que mancha la nube en su huida.
Y hay un búho aferrado a aquella nube,
y de pronto no está.
Ningún alarido te hará saber
que se ha convocado a la muerte. Ella es pequeña,
y práctica; en la sombra,
donde los cardos lanzan sus flores espinosas
en todas direcciones: hacia el seto,
hacia la Vía Láctea, hacia las lápidas apiñadas
como dientes, hacia la ventana marchita.
Y estarás desperdigado entre aquella ventana y el seto
―¿aunque quién podría asegurarlo?― La ceniza
es más ligera que la tierra. Y con el vaivén
indeciso del viento quizá estés
deambulando donde estuvo aquel búho,
o entre los tejos y las hayas.
Debes estar haciendo piruetas,
inalcanzable,
donde el polvo se erige sobre el polvo.

It's rock reconstituted on the rock,

Three beeches sway eternally;

No screech will let you know
a kill's been made. Death is small
and practical, in the shadow,
where thistles thrust their pinnacles
each way: at the hedgerow,
the Milky Way, the lop-toothed huddle
of graves, the wilted window.
And you are scattered between that window and hedge –
though who can say? Ash
is finer than earth. And as the wind
stalls and blows, you must
be shifting where the owl was pinned,
and round the yews and beeches,
pirouetting on graves, out of reach,
where dust is piled on dust.
