Y con el culto, la iglesia de la que era devoto, la Seventh Day Adventist Family, donde comenz\u00f3 su carrera musical.<\/p>\n<p>Se cas\u00f3 con catorce a\u00f1os y a los quince ya era padre. Tocaba el piano de manera pr\u00e1cticamente autodidacta. De la mina a la siderurgia, buscando la manera de dar de comer a su familia, casi sin tiempo para nada m\u00e1s. Comenz\u00f3 a ganarse unas propinas como pianista en el Democratic Club de Pittsburgh, hasta que <strong>Erroll Garner<\/strong> le sugiri\u00f3 que, tal vez, el piano no fuera lo suyo. Se pas\u00f3 a la bater\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chick Webb<\/strong> y <strong>Sid Cattett<\/strong> le dieron la fuerza que luego \u00e9l traslado a sus baquetas. Le empujaron al<em> hard bop<\/em>, donde se sent\u00eda como naciendo mil veces.<\/p>\n<p>Con veinte a\u00f1os lo ficha <strong>Fletcher Henderson<\/strong> para su banda y tres a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s <strong>Mary Lou Williams<\/strong> para su big band. Recorri\u00f3 el sur de los Estados Unidos con <strong>Billy Eckstine<\/strong> desde 1944 a 1947 con la Cradle of Modern Jazz. Durante este periodo colabor\u00f3 con<strong> Charlie Parker<\/strong>, <strong>Dizzy Gillespie<\/strong> y <strong>Miles Davis<\/strong> y entra a formar parte de los c\u00edrculos del <em>be bop.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>En 1947 colabora con <strong>Thelonius Monk<\/strong> en las grabaciones que realiza para el sello Blue Note.<\/p>\n<p>Un a\u00f1o m\u00e1s tarde, tras fallecer su mujer, se marcha a \u00c1frica. All\u00ed se empapa de la m\u00fasica \u00e9tnica africana y la pasa por el filtro de su bater\u00eda para crear el \u00abritmo Blakey\u00bb, aunque este ya no ser\u00eda su nombre. \u00c1frica le regala tambi\u00e9n una nueva religi\u00f3n, el islamismo, y, por tanto, un nuevo nombre:\u00a0Abdullah Ibn Buhaina.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.culturamas.es\/carmenmoreno\/files\/2013\/06\/BLAKEY.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-266 aligncenter\" alt=\"BLAKEY\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.culturamas.es\/carmenmoreno\/files\/2013\/06\/BLAKEY.jpg\" width=\"256\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Los a\u00f1os cincuenta llegan con fuerza para Blakey que, buscando ya su propia manera de expresarse, su identidad en la m\u00fasica, forma la Jazz Messengers con la que consigui\u00f3 todo el r\u00e9dito y con la que consolidaron el movimiento <em>hard bop<\/em>. En este tiempo graba junto al pianista<strong> Horace Silver<\/strong>, el saxo tenor <strong>Hank Mobley<\/strong>, el bajista <strong>Doug Watkins<\/strong> y el trompetista<strong> Kenny Dorhan<\/strong>, el disco: <em>Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers<\/em>. Los Jazz Messengers reivindican el endurecimiento de un ritmo que, en manos de instrumentistas blancos, parece que se ablanda, pierda la dureza de Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">De esta manera se convirti\u00f3 en una instituci\u00f3n musical que perdur\u00f3 treinta a\u00f1os y por la que desfilaron quintetos y sextetos que marcaron un tiempo en la historia del jazz, dirigidos en la base r\u00edtmica por Blakey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">En 1964 su leyenda se hace a\u00fan mayor cuando act\u00faa en el Newport Jazz Festival junto a los tambi\u00e9n bater\u00edas <strong>Max Roach<\/strong>, <strong>Elvin Jones<\/strong> y <strong>Buddy Rich<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Entre 1971 y 1972 se embarca en una gira mundial con el grupo The Giants of Jazz que estaba formado por <strong>Thelonius Monk<\/strong>, <strong>Dizz Gillespie<\/strong>, <strong>Sony Stitt<\/strong> y <strong>Al McKibbon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Muere a los 71 a\u00f1os, cuando todo era jazz, despu\u00e9s de haber dejado su sangre en los toms, tras haber hecho de la bater\u00eda un instrumento m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del mero suelo
