Abdullah Ibn Buhaina, Art Blakey (Pittsburgh, 11 de octubre de 1919-Nueva York, dieciséis de octubre de 1990) nació para ser adulto, para tocar la batería y hacer de cada inspiración música de culto. Y con el culto, la iglesia de la que era devoto, la Seventh Day Adventist Family, donde comenzó su carrera musical.
Se casó con catorce años y a los quince ya era padre. Tocaba el piano de manera prácticamente autodidacta. De la mina a la siderurgia, buscando la manera de dar de comer a su familia, casi sin tiempo para nada más. Comenzó a ganarse unas propinas como pianista en el Democratic Club de Pittsburgh, hasta que Erroll Garner le sugirió que, tal vez, el piano no fuera lo suyo. Se pasó a la batería.
Chick Webb y Sid Cattett le dieron la fuerza que luego él traslado a sus baquetas. Le empujaron al hard bop, donde se sentía como naciendo mil veces.
Con veinte años lo ficha Fletcher Henderson para su banda y tres años después Mary Lou Williams para su big band. Recorrió el sur de los Estados Unidos con Billy Eckstine desde 1944 a 1947 con la Cradle of Modern Jazz. Durante este periodo colaboró con Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie y Miles Davis y entra a formar parte de los círculos del be bop.
En 1947 colabora con Thelonius Monk en las grabaciones que realiza para el sello Blue Note.
Un año más tarde, tras fallecer su mujer, se marcha a África. Allí se empapa de la música étnica africana y la pasa por el filtro de su batería para crear el «ritmo Blakey», aunque este ya no sería su nombre. África le regala también una nueva religión, el islamismo, y, por tanto, un nuevo nombre: Abdullah Ibn Buhaina.
Los años cincuenta llegan con fuerza para Blakey que, buscando ya su propia manera de expresarse, su identidad en la música, forma la Jazz Messengers con la que consiguió todo el rédito y con la que consolidaron el movimiento hard bop. En este tiempo graba junto al pianista Horace Silver, el saxo tenor Hank Mobley, el bajista Doug Watkins y el trompetista Kenny Dorhan, el disco: Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers. Los Jazz Messengers reivindican el endurecimiento de un ritmo que, en manos de instrumentistas blancos, parece que se ablanda, pierda la dureza de Louisiana.
De esta manera se convirtió en una institución musical que perduró treinta años y por la que desfilaron quintetos y sextetos que marcaron un tiempo en la historia del jazz, dirigidos en la base rítmica por Blakey.
En 1964 su leyenda se hace aún mayor cuando actúa en el Newport Jazz Festival junto a los también baterías Max Roach, Elvin Jones y Buddy Rich.
Entre 1971 y 1972 se embarca en una gira mundial con el grupo The Giants of Jazz que estaba formado por Thelonius Monk, Dizz Gillespie, Sony Stitt y Al McKibbon.
Muere a los 71 años, cuando todo era jazz, después de haber dejado su sangre en los toms, tras haber hecho de la batería un instrumento más allá del mero suelo acústico.
