Como el subtítulo indica, estamos ante un catálogo de películas «para llevarse al infierno», cintas anómalas, hipnóticas, desasosegantes; films que sacuden al espectador por lo extraño, por lo insólito, por lo novedoso e incluso por lo insospechado. No se trata de un listado de los mejores títulos de la historia del cine: muchas de las películas que figuran en Cult movies 1 seguramente no destaquen por su calidad, por su belleza, y mucho menos por su desarrollo comercial; hay, sin embargo, en todas ellas un poder de atracción incatalogable que, a lo largo de los años, las ha rodeado de admiradores fascinados, de acólitos, de fieles.
En último caso, en todas ellas se refleja, en mayor o menor grado, el underground, la contracultura, la expresión estética al margen de las normas admitidas que tan querida le es al autor. Cult movies 1 es, en gran medida, la declaración de intenciones de un escritor inquieto que, como los hacedores de estas películas, consideran que siempre hay y siempre queda un resquicio por el que colarse y un camino que recorrer.
El autor no contemplaba una segunda parte que posteriormente vio la luz y que esta misma editorial también se ha encargado de reeditar: Cult Movies 2. Películas para la penumbra. De ahí el número 1 en el título de este libro.
